A seasoned coach and therapist, Dr. Bolanos’ background includes over 25 years experience in personal and leadership development, support of academics, executives and entrepreneurs, and specific work with women and People of Color.
Her passion is helping others to realize their full potential as integrated human beings, able to blend their personal and career lives seamlessly while prioritizing those areas that are most important to their values. With a fierce determination to see people as their highest selves, Carmen’s clients learn that she will consistently encourage them as they work towards their personal visions. Carmen’s background as a dynamic coach and trainer has included positions in training for both the ICF accredited MentorCoach Inc., in which she was integral in creating the structures needed for the accreditation process, and Martin Seligman’s Authentic Happiness Coaching Program. In addition, she has mentored highly talented university and Olympic level female athletes through the University of Texas. Most recently, Carmen has joined the faculty of Fielding Graduate University’s Evidence Based Coaching Program. And in addition to her private clients, she has been enjoying working with a wide variety of professionals through BetterUp Coaching.
Carmen has maintained an international coaching practice for 20 years that has reached clients in Europe, Australia, and South America as well as the United States. Her experience as a trainer was also international, spanning 5 continents. With her help Carmen’s clients have:
- Strategized for career growth in highly competitive settings, and in settings where the client has found themselves in a minority group either by gender or race.
- Brainstormed and launched small businesses that have grown to sustain themselves, their families, and employees.
- Found new ways to achieve life balance between home and professional lives.
- Learned new ways to negotiate with spouses to create more balance in the home and free energy for personal endeavors.
- Discovered new efficiency strategies to maximize result from their efforts.
Her executive and professional clients have included small business owners, attorneys, psychiatrists, psychologists, medical doctors and social workers in private practice and CEOs of companies with over 100 employees as well as individuals working for corporations such as Dell Computer, Giro, Towers Watson, and AllClearID.

As part of her work within academia, Carmen was chosen as one of two coaches for a research study of female faculty in the STEM areas, funded by an NIH grant and conducted across four universities in Ohio. She also serves as a designated coach through an NSF grant at Syracuse University, and as a coach for the Benjamin Banneker Institute at Harvard University’s Astronomy Department dedicated to students and faculty of color.
Carmen holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology through Boston University, and is a Master Certified Coach through the International Coach Federation. Her coach-specific training includes MentorCoach Inc., Authentic Happiness Coaching, the Business Coaches Alliance, and training within Executive Career Hub. She has also completed certification programs in the Winslow Personality Profile, and the DISC. She engages in continuing education and is especially interested in topics of leadership coaching and the neuroscience of coaching.
Carmen has a passion for location independent living, residing in various countries while maintaining her coaching practice. In pursuit of this passion, she co-founded an online community, NuNomad.com, devoted to helping others design this lifestyle, and co-authored two books on the subject, “Quit Dreaming and Go!”, and “The NuNomad”. This community was featured as the cover story for Businessweek.com in its first year.
Finally, Carmen is exceedingly encouraged and excited by her own three daughters and the amazing strides they take each year in life. She resides mainly in Austin, TX, but regularly moves location according to the opportunities that present themselves in life. She has been blessed to spend time living and working in Brazil, Mexico, and various states within the US.
